Competition Team Performance Results:
While Syracuse Jundokan is not a sport-karate dojo, we are very proud of our ability
to consistently produce winning karate athletes at all levels. This is a credit to our
instructors and the entire team as well as a testament to the benefits of authentic
karate training applied to a sport arena. The following tables illustrate the consistent
success of our entire team.

Kaitlyn Herrera was the first to compete after arriving just in time - only five minutes before her division started! This was Kaitlyn's first tournament and her kata was exceptional, but not good enough to medal against some other very good competitors.
Next to go was Ronnie Puma in the 13 and under black belt category. Ronnie did a nice kata and fought well against a much more experienced competitor, but had to settle for the silver medal in both divisions.
Finally, Kerri Sweredoski took third place in the women's intermediate kata division and fourth place in the sparring division. |

Ronnie was the only competitor on Saturday, the first day of competition. Ronnie fought extremely well and made everyone very proud. After a slow start against his first opponent, in which he allowed a couple of points against him, Ronnie opened up to easily win the first match and then take the gold after three more matches in which he didn't allow a single opposing score! Ronnie also performed exceptional kata, but did not advance to the medal rounds.
The first competitor to compete on Sunday was Team Captain, Bryan Randazzo. Bryan won first place in kata after a performance of Shisochin in the first match, followed by three strong performances of Suparinpei in subsequent matches. He then competed in kumite, earning the gold medal after three very competitive matches.
Next to compete was Ken Velazquez, competing in the beginner men's division. Ken didn't medal in kata, but earned the bronze medal in kumite - a very strong finish for someone with only a couple months of training at this regional event!
Finally, Kerri Sweredoski competed against more experienced opponents in the Women's Novice division even though she qualified as a beginner. Kerri took third place in kata and first place in kumite in her divisions. |

As usual, Ronnie Puma was the first to compete, being the youngest of the team. This was Ronnie's first time competing in a black-belt division. Although Ronnie is a blue-belt at our school, he wanted the additional pressure and experience of competing against black belts. In his first division, Ronnie performed exceptional kata for his level, but failed to medal against the black belts, coming in at fourth place. But then in the sparring division, Ronnie made us all very proud, winning all of his matches to claim the gold medal!
Next to compete was Kerri Sweredoski in the Women's Novice divisions. Kerri won both kata and sparring and has decided to move up to the intermediate divisions for future events to experience a little more pressure.
Finally, Stacey McNeill competed in the Women's Intermediate divisions. Stacey didn't place in kata, but was very happy to win the gold in sparring - her first gold medal at a Canadian event! |

Ronnie Puma was the first to compete, entering the intermediate division in both kata and kumite. After taking and defending the silver medal position in kata, Ronnie then went on to effortlessly win the kumite division; a few amazing kicks to the head quickly earning him the gold medal.
Next to compete was Kerri Sweredoski in the women’s beginner/novice division. Kerri earned the silver medal in kata and scored with her new "secret move" to win the gold in kumite. (We can't tell you - it's a secret!)
Our next two competitors, Tim Pratt and Kenny Velasquez were first timers to the competition arena with both doing extremely well in the men’s beginner divisions. First, Kenny took the silver in 19 to 34 year old kata and then fought his way against a tough competitor to take the gold in kumite. Next up was Tim Pratt in the 35 and older division. It was a strong division with several athletes new to AAU Karate. After doing very well in his kata division he battled his way to the finals in kumite where he pushed the match into overtime before taking the silver medal.
Finally, Stacey McNeill gave a very impressive showing in the women’s intermediate division taking silver in one of her best kata performances to date. Stacey then went on to easily win the gold in Kumite. Stacey was also asked to participate in an exhibition match against a very powerful opponent who's division was cancelled due to a lack of participation. Stacey did an amazing job of holding her own and taking the win against a much larger opponent.
Our appreciation goes out to Bryan Randazzo, who was unable to compete due to an injury at the Florida Citrus Cup. Bryan volunteered as a referee in the morning and then did a great job coaching the other athletes in the afternoon.
This event was a terrific start to the official AAU Season with all athletes qualifying in the top two for the regional qualifiers in Albany, NY this April. |

Bryan Randazzo did very well at this, his first, international tournament. The event was attended by competitors from all over the world, including the well known team from Azerbaijan.
Bryan fought extremely well, but after some tough victories against representatives from Costa Rica and Chile (in which he fought to a 9-0 shut-out), Bryan had to pull out of the competition during his semi-final match due to a foot injury.
Bryan is healing quickly and we're all hoping to see him continue his terrific season once he reenters competition in a few weeks. |

This event was well attended with representatives from several dojos participating from Rochester, Syracuse and beyond.
Ronnie Puma was first to compete in kata, winning his division and taking the gold medal. Kerri Sweredoski and Stacey McNeill then competed in the women's beginners and intermediate kata divisions, with Kerri winning the gold medal in her division.
In the afternoon, everybody competed in kumite, with Ronnie performing first and winning the intermediate division easily with a perfect shut-out of each opponent. Kerri and Stacey then competed in a combined women's division with beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced athletes all together. Both made it to the semi-finals with Kerri going on to the finals before taking the silver medal. Stacey also medaled, earning bronze for her efforts.
Finally, Ronnie was invited to compete in the advanced division to gain a little more competitive pressure. He also won this division, fighting through an injury sustained in the first match. |

Our team did extremely well at this recent event with some extremely competitive pressure from some of Toronto's most successful karate teams.
Ronnie Puma was the first to compete and fought made his way into the finals where he faced the winner of the last event in November, 2007. He took and held a 4-0 lead for most of the match, but then lost in the final seconds when his opponent scored a three point head kick and Ronnie was penalized for excessive contact in the same exchange. Ronnie did extremely well to place second in this highly competitive division and to do so well in the finals against a consistent winner of the division.
Next to compete were Kerri Sweredoski and Stacey McNeill. First, Kerri won first place in the beginner women's kata division and then joined Stacey in the intermediate women's kumite event. Both did extremely well with Kerri making it through to the semi-finals before being eliminated in 3rd place for the bronze medal.
Finally, Bryan Randazzo moved up in weight class to the -75kg division after winning the -70kg division at the last event. He dominated two tough opponents, earning a 7-0 shut-out in his first match and a 5-0 shut-out in the second match to earn the gold. This was especially impressive given the strength of the teams that both of these athletes represented. |

| Bryan Randazzo of Syracuse Jundokan not only won gold medals in both of his own age-group divisions, but also entered the advanced adult division. He competed against Brian Irr, a member of the US National Karate Team and Pan-Am Games gold medalist. They shared the adult victories with Randazzo taking gold and Irr taking silver in kata, while Irr took gold and Randazzo took silver in the sparring division. |
