Competition Karate Training:
|
Sport karate is not practiced at The Jundokan in Okinawa and Syracuse Jundokan
offers competition training only as an optional program for those interested
in the exciting and dynamic sport of competition karate. Additionally, while our
members may choose to compete in kata competition, we do not practice or teach
the standardized or shitei kata required for high-level kata competition.

You can't be a successful competitor or coach without fully understanding the rules of
competition. Please download and review the rules for karate competition from the following
organizations:
WKF Rules - Used by USANKF and most international organizations.
AAU Rules - Used by the AAU and affiliate organizations.
Please note that there are now substantial differences between the competition
rules for these two organizations.

Please take a minute or two to watch some amazing footage
of international competitor, Junior Lefevre in action!

Competition classes focus on preparing students for traditional karate competition
at a regional, national and international level. Using advanced training techniques
developed by the US National Karate Team coaches in collaboration with the
US Olympic Training Center, students are well prepared for competition at all levels.
|
|
|
Our advanced sport-specific conditioning exercises developed by the US National
Karate Team Coaches and the US Olympic Strength and Conditioning Coaches will
provide an excellent supplement to our students’ karate training and overall
physical health.
|
|
Our primary competition affiliation is with the USANKF which is the US Olympic
Committee sanctioned national governing body for the sport of karate. In addition,
our students attend AAU events and other tournaments that provide opportunities to
prepare for high-level competition.
|
|
|
Our affiliation with the program directors of the Developmental to Elite Sport-Karate
Program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid provides us a unique
opportunity to train at an elite level on site at the training center. Under the
guidance of Program Directors Tokey Hill and Eric Hill these camps are offered each
year to developmental athletes of all levels.

Three members of our team travelled to Toronto, Ontario to compete in the 2008 Iwata Cup.
Kaitlyn Herrera was the first to compete after arriving just in time - only five minutes before her division started! This was Kaitlyn's first tournament and her kata was exceptional, but not good enough to medal against some other very good competitors.
Next to go was Ronnie Puma in the 13 and under black belt category. Ronnie did a nice kata and fought well against a much more experienced competitor, but had to settle for the silver medal in both divisions.
Finally, Kerri Sweredoski took third place in the women's intermediate kata division and fourth place in the sparring division.
With the AAU National Championships so close this year, we're hoping some of our local
supporters will be able to attend and see the team in action for themselves. Please
contact us for information about attendance at this terrific event.
Please take a moment to review our past performance in detail.
