A letter to prospective students:

Thank you for visiting our web site.  Syracuse Jundokan is a non-commercial karate school in Cicero, NY (about 10 minutes from downtown Syracuse).  We are committed to providing the finest quality of authentic martial arts training with the following priorities in mind:

  • To preserve the integrity of Goju-ryu Karate-do as a traditional Okinawan martial art without compromising its form for commercial profit.

  • To help improve the quality of our students' lives by developing confidence, focus and drive that will benefit them and their families throughout their lives.

  • To provide the highest level of competition karate training possible to prepare athletes of all levels for Olympic-style karate competition.

I have been training in authentic karate-do since 1984 including three years during which I lived and trained in Okinawa, Japan under the guidance of Miyazato Ei'ichi Sensei.  Miyazato Sensei was a senior student of Miyagi Chojun Sensei, the founder of Goju-ryu Karate-do.  He and his senior instructors made a deep impact on my life and my understanding of karate-do and martial arts in general. I feel a strong commitment to pass on what I have learned in the same welcoming and caring spirit which has been shown to me.  Since my time in Okinawa, I have worked hard to maintain annual visits in order to progress in my own knowledge and abilities for the benefit of all the members of our dojo.

Additionally, I have won five national championship titles in karate competition from our national governing body as sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee and coached five athletes to national championship titles of their own.  In 1994, I represented the United States National Team in the World Karate Federation World Championships in Malaysia.  I continue to maintain strong ties with current United States national team members and coaches in order to provide the best competitive training opportunities for our local members.

This combination of authentic Okinawan karate training and Olympic style competition training is unique in Central New York and we welcome new and visiting students to come and experience the benefits of karate training first-hand.

Thank you once again for your visit and best wishes for the future - we hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

David T. Oddy
Chief Instructor, Syracuse Jundokan
